Health technology can make Medicare easier to use, but it can just as easily create another layer of passwords, notifications, dashboards, chargers, and numbers you are not sure what to do with.

That is why I would start with a much less exciting question than “What is the smartest health gadget?” Ask: What healthcare problem am I trying to make easier?

Maybe you want quicker access to test results. Maybe getting to appointments is difficult. Perhaps your clinician wants blood pressure readings between visits, or you manage diabetes and qualify for a continuous glucose monitor. Those are concrete problems technology can help solve. A smartwatch that gives you 17 wellness scores before breakfast may be interesting, but interesting and medically useful are not the same thing.

The smartest Medicare-friendly technology is usually the technology that connects to care you actually need.

Start With the Health Problem, Not the Gadget

It is easy to shop backward.

You see a wearable, connected scale, smart blood pressure cuff, or medication app and then try to find a reason it belongs in your health routine.

I would reverse that.

Start with the friction:

  • Do appointments require difficult transportation?
  • Are you constantly trying to remember medication changes?
  • Does your doctor need readings between office visits?
  • Are your test results scattered across several healthcare systems?
  • Are you managing a condition that requires frequent measurements?
  • Do you simply want motivation to move more?

Once you know the problem, you can decide whether technology actually makes it easier.

That distinction matters with Medicare because a consumer wellness product, a Medicare-covered medical device, and a technology benefit offered by a Medicare Advantage plan are three different things.

Your Apple Watch does not become Medicare-covered simply because you use it for health. A connected blood pressure cuff supplied as part of medically necessary remote patient monitoring is a different situation. A Medicare Advantage plan might separately offer fitness or technology benefits under its own rules.

The most useful health technology does not create more data. It makes an existing healthcare task easier to understand, complete, or discuss.

5 Types of Health Tech Worth Considering

1. Start with your patient portal before buying anything.

One of the most useful digital health tools may already be free.

A patient portal can give you access to information such as:

  • Test results.
  • Visit summaries.
  • Medication lists.
  • Appointment details.
  • Secure messages.
  • Referral information.
  • Some billing records.
  • Clinical notes.

That can be especially valuable when several healthcare professionals are involved in your care.

I would learn the portal you already have before paying for an app that promises to become your personal health command center.

2. Use telehealth when it removes a real access problem.

Telehealth is most useful when it saves a trip that does not actually require you to be in the room.

But I would not turn “telehealth available” into “telehealth is always better.”

Some concerns need a physical examination, procedure, imaging, laboratory testing, or other in-person care. A video visit can also be frustrating for someone with unreliable internet, hearing difficulties, limited comfort with technology, or a condition that is hard to assess remotely.

The question to ask is not:

“Can I make this a telehealth appointment?”

It is:

“Will anything important be lost if I do?”

Also confirm that the provider participates in Medicare and that the specific service is covered under your circumstances.

Convenience is useful. Appropriate care matters more.

3. Remote patient monitoring can be genuinely valuable when a clinician is actually monitoring.

This is where health technology starts moving from consumer convenience into medical care.

Medicare currently covers remote patient monitoring for qualifying acute and chronic conditions. CMS describes it as collecting physiologic health information using an internet-connected medical device that digitally transmits data. Depending on the medical situation, remotely monitored information might involve measures such as:

  • Blood pressure.
  • Weight.
  • Glucose.

The important piece is not that the device connects to the internet.

It is that the information is being collected as part of an appropriate care plan.

That is very different from buying a Bluetooth blood pressure monitor and assuming someone at the doctor's office is watching the readings.

Usually, they are not unless a specific monitoring arrangement has been established.

Ask:

  • What are you asking me to measure?
  • How often should I measure it?
  • Who reviews the readings?
  • How quickly are abnormal readings reviewed?
  • What should I do if I see a concerning result?
  • Are there costs for the monitoring service?
  • Is the device being supplied to me?
  • How do I stop the service if it is no longer needed?

A connected medical device becomes much more useful when you know who is reviewing the data, why they need it, and what happens when the number changes.

That is the kind of technology integration worth paying attention to.

4. A continuous glucose monitor can be valuable when you medically qualify for one.

Continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs, are a good example of why Medicare coverage should drive the technology decision rather than wellness trends.

For eligible people with diabetes, Medicare Part B may cover a CGM and related supplies when a healthcare professional orders it. Current eligibility can include people who take insulin or have a history of problematic low blood sugar, along with other requirements. CGM coverage requirements

For someone who qualifies, continuous glucose data can reduce reliance on individual snapshots and provide information that helps guide diabetes management.

For someone without diabetes who simply saw influencers using CGMs to rank breakfast foods, that is a different conversation.

A normal glucose rise after eating does not automatically indicate that a food is harmful. More data can sometimes create unnecessary anxiety when there is no clear medical question behind the measurement.

I would therefore put CGMs in the high-value when appropriate category.

If you have diabetes, ask your healthcare professional:

  • Do I meet Medicare's coverage requirements?
  • What device is appropriate for me?
  • Which supplier should I use?
  • What will my out-of-pocket costs be?
  • How should I respond to high or low readings?
  • How will you use my CGM reports during treatment?

If you do not have diabetes but are concerned about blood sugar, start with a medical conversation rather than assuming continuous monitoring is the necessary next step.

5. Consumer wearables are useful for trends, but know where their job ends.

Fitness trackers and smartwatches can be genuinely helpful.

They can encourage walking, record workouts, show resting heart-rate trends, estimate sleep, provide reminders, and make activity patterns much easier to see.

Those are reasonable wellness uses.

The problem begins when a consumer wearable starts sounding like a medical diagnostic system.

“How much am I actually walking?”

“Has my usual activity fallen recently?”

“Am I keeping a fairly regular sleep schedule?”

“How often am I completing the workouts I planned?”

I would be much more cautious about questions like:

“Do I have hypertension?”

“Is my heart rhythm normal?”

“Should I change my medication?”

“Is this chest discomfort safe to ignore because my watch says everything looks fine?”

Those belong with healthcare professionals and appropriately validated medical tools.

Medicare Advantage Tech Perks Deserve a Second Look, Not Automatic Excitement

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer supplemental benefits involving fitness programs, digital wellness tools, remote-access services, or other technology.

These can be nice extras.

They should remain extras.

A wearable discount is not worth losing access to a physician you rely on.

A free fitness tracker does not compensate for significantly worse prescription coverage.

A sophisticated health app is less important than understanding your copays, provider network, prior authorization requirements, and annual out-of-pocket exposure.

If a technology benefit interests you, ask the plan:

  • Is the device free, discounted, or reimbursed?
  • Which exact devices qualify?
  • Is there an annual dollar limit?
  • Does everyone in the plan qualify?
  • Does the benefit require enrollment in another program?
  • Is a subscription included?
  • What happens if I change plans?
  • Who receives the data?
  • Where is the benefit described in the Evidence of Coverage?

Do not assume an insurer offers the same technology benefit in every Medicare Advantage plan it sells. Benefits can vary by plan and geographic area.

Medication Apps Can Help, but Keep the System Simple

Medication reminders are one of those health technologies that can be extremely useful without being technologically exciting.

A basic phone alarm may be enough.

Some people prefer a medication app that records when doses were taken, tracks refills, or stores a current medication list.

Others will find pill organizers and a piece of paper much easier.

The right system depends on the problem.

If you simply forget your 8 p.m. tablet, a recurring phone alarm may solve it.

If you manage many prescriptions, several dosing times, and frequent medication changes, a more structured tool may be worthwhile.

If memory, vision, dexterity, or cognitive concerns make medication management difficult, an app may not be enough. A pharmacist, clinician, caregiver, blister-pack service, automatic dispenser, or other support may be more appropriate.

Do not let medication technology create false confidence either. An app can remind someone to take a pill. It cannot decide whether the prescription is still correct.

Decide Who Really Needs Your Health Data

Health technology works by collecting information.

Sometimes a lot of information.

Before connecting your watch to a wellness platform, your blood pressure monitor to an app, the app to an insurer, and everything to another health dashboard, stop and ask what each connection accomplishes.

Do you need the insurer to see your step count?

Does your physician want sleep data from your watch?

Is the nutrition app gaining access to information unrelated to nutrition?

Can you revoke access later?

Does deleting the app delete the account and stored data?

A useful rule is to connect only what solves a clear problem.

More sharing does not automatically mean more coordinated care.

You do not need every health device talking to every health app. Sometimes the healthiest digital setup is the one with fewer connections.

Use a Five-Question Test Before Adding Any Health Technology

Before buying, downloading, or connecting something new, ask:

What problem does this solve?

If you cannot answer in one sentence, pause.

Will my healthcare professional actually use this information?

If the answer is no, decide whether the information is still useful to you personally.

Is this a wellness tool or a medical device?

The distinction affects how seriously you should treat the results.

What will it cost after the first year?

Include subscriptions, supplies, replacement sensors, cellular service, accessories, and other recurring expenses.

Will I realistically use it?

The best blood pressure monitor does nothing from the closet.

The most sophisticated patient portal is useless if you never log in.

A smartwatch cannot improve activity simply by existing on your wrist.

Health technology needs a job.

Let Technology Make Healthcare Smaller

The best health technology does not make you think about your health all day.

It quietly removes friction.

A patient portal helps you find the test result without making a phone call. Telehealth saves an unnecessary trip. A connected blood pressure cuff gives a clinician information they actually requested. A CGM helps an eligible person manage diabetes. A fitness tracker reminds someone that today's total movement consisted mostly of walking to the refrigerator.

Those are useful jobs.

What I would avoid is assembling technology simply because more monitoring feels like more control. Sometimes it creates the opposite: more scores to interpret, more alerts to worry about, and more health homework.

With Medicare, start with the care you need. Then choose the smallest piece of technology that makes that care easier.

That is usually smarter than asking the gadget to decide what your health needs should be.
